OMG...HELP with Word? T_T

Hey... so I was writing something a week or two ago on my laptop. Came back to it tonight to finish with the last few paragraphs... Went to save and.... my computer froze. x_x I didn't know if it had saved yet or not, so I grabbed a piece of paper and wrote down all the New Writing from tonight because it was still on the screen. Meanwhile, nothing worked, not mouse, when I closed the monitor it stayed on... ><; So I forcibly switched it off. I waited. I turned it on. No scandisk (or whatever it is XP Media Center has) ran. I restarted it just in case. Went to open the Word file to see if it had saved or not and... Word would not open it! x_X; I tried changing the file extension, but it wouldn't let me. It only added an extra file extension to it ( .rtf.txt ). I tried opening with Word Pad and Notepad. Both would open it... but... for some reason, they seem to think that the document ends near the beginning of the file. O.o; Like in the first half page... and the document is supposed to be two and a half pages. ><;

I really don't know what to do! Is there a way to restore the document? When I opened Word, it tried to do its own Recover type thing (Word saved an Auto Save copy) but um... I think what it actually did was save over the older saved version with the newer damaged version. I DID NOT CLICK SAVE after the comp was restarted. x_x; The only thing I can think of is an error occurred during the save, and it corrupted the data!

But... CAN I restore the original file? I know there's a System Restore program that I checked into, and it will only go back to Friday (which is fine, I haven't been on the comp that much since Friday), but the instructions seem to indicate that only system settings are restored, and actual documents aren't changed. So if that's true, that won't really help me I don't think...

I don't have any floppy/CD/etc copies. This was going to be sent out tonight for something and I wouldn't need to save a copy cos it would be online too. (that was my rationalizing talking) I have not done any system backups to disk or whatever because I got this computer for Christmas.... I'm still trying to put files ON it from the other comps. ><;;;;

So... yeah... I figured since there are so many writers floating around here someone might be able to help me. I'd really appreciate it.... even if it's to say "Sorry, you're just going to have to re-write it." Even though that would really suck. v_v;

Thanks a lot, it was a big help... unfortunately, according to that page, the bulk of my document seems to be irretrievable. All those numbers are corrupt data, and/or formatting. What a bummer. v_v
