Computer Problems

Post by dracosinfernoweyr »

Well, the computer finally died on me. It's in the shop as we speak. No telling how long, might get it back tomorrow, might get it back next week. Anyway, just letting you know why I dissappeared.

Hope I get to come back soon. o.o

I'm back, with nice new, shiny windows XP and other new bits and bobs I'm sure. But, I am having one minor problem.. while the guy *swears* he did not wipe the harddrive... nothing in my picture file opens up. Which means I may have just lost a rather large chunk of my memories. Try all of the pictures I took my senior year, prom, and other big things I'm sure.

So uh, I'm back... even if I am flailing around in anxiety at the moment. ;.;

Ask the guy EXACTLY what he did. Did he format anything? Delete ANY directories? Change any settings on your BIOS or anything else weird? If he basically just reinstalled XP over whatever OS you had before, it's likely the reinstall ate your files @_@ That's what happened to my Alienware a few months ago when the bad sectors spread beyond all hope and I had to do a full reinstall of XP.

Flail not, though; maybe the guy is just a dork and forgot he changed something, or maybe he moved the files. Did he do a backup? Check your Recycle Bin, too XD Just some thoughts.

If nothing else, there ARE services out there that can restore "wiped" files from an "erased" HD, but they are expensive :///

Well, we made the jump from windows 98 to XP, new motherboard, new ram, new fan from the sound of it. Everything new except for the harddrive. All of my parents files are still there, but when I found mine, everything had been turned to shortcuts that don't work.

So I hope they're still around here somewhere. I just don't have the abilities to scour the harddrive, since my step-father decided to set me up with a limited account. >.>

I would guess that your files were stored somewhere that was overwritten when you reinstalled Windows, overwriting 98 with XP.

Or maybe it's a result of having the separate accounts. I always advise against using such accounts, actually, for it makes XP rather unstable after a while, especially if you use the computer a lot, and the more accounts you have, the harder it is to get rid of various bugs... But... *shrugs* Whatever works for you.

You could see if you can get into the main account, since if the files are still there somewhere, you should be able to locate them in the main account even if they're not in your own account. If you can find them that way, you should be able to move them to your account, I think.

Yes, all my dragoning things are either in my geocities accounts or my photobucket one. I also saved a few things I was worried about losing into my photobucket account as well. Too bad I didn't think about all my photos. v.v;;

Now I've got to find alll the comics I was reading online again too, if I managed to remember them all! XDD;;
